Getting started
Do I need an account?
No. You can use everything as a guest, and your progress is saved on your phone. An account is only for keeping your progress if you switch phones. You can add one anytime in Profile & settings.
What's the quick check at the start?
Ten short problems that take about two minutes. They tell the app which facts you already know, so your first sessions don't waste time on them. If you're not sure of an answer, tap "Not sure" instead of guessing. You can also skip it.
How long is a session?
About seven minutes, in three parts: a fact warm-up, one strategy, then mixed problems where you choose the route. You can keep practising afterwards if you like, but one session a day is enough to get faster.
Sessions and streaks
How does the streak work?
Each day you finish a session adds a day to your streak. One missed day per week is covered automatically as a rest day, shown with a small moon. A second missed day in the same week starts a new streak.
Your best streak is always kept and shown next to the current one.
What happens if I leave a session halfway?
Tap the × at the top left and the session pauses. Everything you've answered is saved, and Home shows a Resume button that takes you back to the same problem. A paused session lasts until midnight. Only finished sessions count towards your streak.
I've been away for a while. Where do I start?
After three or more days away, your next session is an easy restart: a little shorter, with facts you know well and a quick refresher on your latest strategy. No new strategy unlocks that day. After a month or more, it also runs a few check problems to see what's still fresh.
Strategies and hints
Why does the app show me a faster route?
When you get a problem right, the app puts the long way next to a shorter one. Comparing them side by side is one of the best ways to learn when a shortcut fits. You don't have to use it next time.
What if I prefer my own way?
Sometimes the app asks which way felt easier. If you pick your own way, you'll see that shortcut a little less often. You'll still see it now and then, and you can reset these preferences in Profile & settings.
Do hints count against me?
No. A problem where you used a hint just doesn't count towards mastering that strategy. Nothing else changes.
When does the next strategy unlock?
Once you get problems right with your newest strategy at least 80% of the time, over two sessions. To keep things manageable, a new strategy unlocks at most every third session. The Strategies tab shows what's coming up.
Your account
How do I save my progress?
Open Profile & settings by tapping your crow on Home, then choose Continue with Google (on Android) or Continue with Apple (on iPhone), or the button below it for the other options, including email. With email, we send you a six-digit code to type into the app. There's no password to remember.
I got a new phone. How do I get my progress back?
Install the app, tap "I already have an account" on the welcome screen, and sign in the same way you did before. Your streak, facts and strategies come back straight away.
The sign-in code didn't arrive.
Check your spam or junk folder, and that the email address is spelled right. Codes work for one hour, so you can ask for a new one from the same screen.
If it still doesn't arrive, write to us and we'll help.
It says I have progress in two places. What should I pick?
This happens when you practised as a guest and your account already has progress too. Combine both is almost always right: it keeps every fact and strategy you know from either place. "Use the account only" removes what's on this phone, so the app asks you to confirm first.
How do I delete my account?
Open Profile & settings and choose Delete account and data. This removes your account and everything in it, on your phone and on our servers, and it can't be undone. As a guest, the same option deletes everything on your phone.
Reminders
How do I change the reminder time?
In Profile & settings, under Daily reminder, tap Time. You can also turn reminders off there.
I'm not getting reminders.
If Profile & settings says notifications are off, tap Open phone settings and allow notifications for Mental Math Crow.
Reminders also skip days you've already practised. If you ignore them for a few days in a row, they slow down and then pause until you open the app again.
Language and numbers
Can I use the app in German?
Yes. The app follows your phone's language, and you can change it in Profile & settings. In German, problems use · for multiply and : for divide, like at school. You can switch back to × and ÷ if you prefer.
